Security forces kill top militant in Kashmir

Four militants, including Nadeem Khan, a self-styled district commander of the Pakistan-based Al-Bader outfit, were killed in separate encounters in the Kashmir valley, a Border Security Force spokesman said on Tuesday.

In another incident, five persons, including three securitymen, were injured in a grenade explosion, he added.

Khan was killed along with two of his associates in a three-hour long gunbattle with the BSF at Ringal village in Ganderba area on the outskirts of Srinagar on Monday night, the spokesman said.

Following specific information about presence of the three militants on Monday evening, the BSF troops assisted by a commando platoon laid cordon around the village, the spokesman said. As soon as the cordon was laid, the militants tried to flee, but were surrounded.

The militants then threw hand grenades and opened fire. In the ensuing encounter, Khan and his two local associates, Bashir Ahmad Guroo and Javed Ahmad Taploo, were killed, the spokesman said, adding Khan was active in the Ganderbal area for the last six months and had specially come to disrupt the Amarnath yatra.

A resident of Rawalpindi in Pakistan, Khan was carrying a reward of Rs 200,000 on his head. He was instrumental in motivating and recruiting youth for joining militancy. Khan was also assigned the task of organising fidayeen (suicidal) attacks, the spokesman said.

In another encounter, a police spokesman said an unidentified militant was killed by the security forces at Samrawali-Buniyar in Baramulla district on Monday.

Five persons, including three CRPF jawans, were injured in a grenade explosion triggered by militants at Khanya in downtown Srinagar on Monday night, the spokesman added.
