AP local bodies polls: Cong, Telangana Rashtra Samithi gain at TDP's expense

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

The Congress and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) had made significant gains in the panchayat raj (local self-government bodies) elections in Andhra Pradesh.

In the backward Telangana region, the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has virtually conceded as many as seven out of nine districts to these two rival parties.

As counting progressed in the 22 rural districts in the state on Tuesday, it became increasingly clear that the opposition parties - Congress, TRS and even the two Communist parties - had put up a relatively better performance at the expense of the TDP.

The good performance of the TRS, which is spearheading the movement for a separate Telangana state, has come as a setback to the TDP, whose main poll plank in the region was a samaikya (united) Andhra Pradesh.

The TRS and Congress, which contested separately, can grab a majority of the zilla parishads and mandal parishads if they reach a post-poll understanding.

In several districts in coastal Andhra and the Rayalaseema regions, the Congress and TDP are engaged in a neck-and-neck race to gain control of the mandal parishads and zilla parishads (local self-government bodies).

The elections were held in 22 districts in two phases - on July 12 and 15. The counting of votes was taken up at 504 counting centres all over the state on Tuesday.

At the time of filing this report, out of the 4,425 mandal panchayats for which results had been declared, the TDP had bagged 1,910 seats, followed by Congress with 1,708, TRS - 386, CPI-M 84, BJP - 72, CPOI - 57 and independents and others 208 seats.

Out of 96 zilla parishads for which results had been declared, 35 went to the TDP, followed by 33 to the Congress, 27 to the TRS and others one.
