Six elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha from TN

Six officials nominees, including four belonging to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham (AIADMK), were on Monday declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu by way of filling up an equal number of vacancies in the biennial elections.

Those elected are P G Narayanan, R Kamaraj, S S Chandran and Gokula Indira (All AIADMK), R Sarath Kumar (DMK) and B S Gnanadesikan (TMC).

Sarath Kumar is a popular Tamil film hero and Chandran is a film comedian.

Chief Electoral Officer and Returning officer for the polls, Mrutunjay Sarangi, handed over the certificate of election to the respective candidates in the afternoon.

Monday was the last day for withdrawal of nomination papers.

Those retiring on July 24 are former Union minister Jayanthi Natarajan (TMC), V P Doraisamy (DMK), O S Manian and R Margabandhu (AIADMK), Dr Masthan and N Rajendran (both unattached).
