12-hour Assam bandh
passes off peacefully

The 12-hour Assam bandh called by the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) on Monday to protest the extension of Naga ceasefire to neighbouring states passed off peacefully evoking partial response, official sources said.

Normal life was affected in the Brahmaputra Valley with business establishments and educational institutions remaining closed.

The bandh, however, evoked no response in the Barak Valley.

Official sources said the bandh, which ended at 1700 hours (IST), was peaceful with no reports of any untoward incident reported from any part of the state.

Railway sources said their operations were unaffected with no rescheduling or cancellation of trains.

Airport officials at the Lokopriyo Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport reported normal movement of flights.

All long distance services of the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) were on schedule though in some areas police escorts had been provided.

Private city buses were, however, off the roads and vehicular traffic was thin.

AJYCP president Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee said that the bandh was 'successful and peaceful'.

The United Committee of Manipur had also extended their support to the bandh.
