Clashes in Berhampur University

At least ten students of the Berhampur University in Bhubanewar, Orissa were injured and 25 people arrested after a clash with the police on Thursday night.

The university authorities closed the institution sine die on Friday.

Irate students ransacked the Baidyanathpur police station on Thursday night after two of them were refused a lift by the driver and cleaner of a minibus.

The vice-chancellor of the university, Prof A P Padhi, said that the authorities had decided to close the institution sine die in view of the incident.

The students have been asked to vacate the hostels, he added.

Tension ran high after the police let off the crew of the bus whom the students had taken to the police station.

A large number of students then gheraoed the police station and ransacked it following which armed police arrived. The students later alleged that the police had resorted to a lathicharge to disperse them.

Angry students on Friday resorted to a roadblock outside the Khallikote college. They also disrupted train services for sometime by squatting on the railway tracks.

Though trains services were resumed with the intervention of the police, minibus and van owners had stopped plying their vehicles in protest against Thursday night's incident.

The Berhampur city superintendent of police, Binoytosh Mishra, said no case had been registered as yet in connection with the incident.
