Kashmir MP's brother shot dead in Pattan

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Militants gunned down Nazir Ahmed, younger brother of National Conference Member of Parliament Abdul Rashid Shaheen, in the main bazaar of Pattan town in Baramulla district on Wednesday afternoon.

Ahmed died on the way to hospital.

In another incident, militants tried to disrupt a function that was to be addressed by Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah at Khanyar in downtown Srinagar.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Srinagar-Budgam range) K Rajendra told rediff.com that militants fired a rifle grenade at the venue.

The grenade missed the target and exploded on the road killing a woman bystander. Eight persons, including three security personnel, were also injured in the attack.

The function at Khanyar coincided with the death anniversary of Begum Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah's mother.

Police sources said the grenade attack took place half an hour before the chief minister was due to arrive on the scene.

Nobody has yet claimed responsibility for both attacks.
