Eight persons were killed and an equal number injured when the jeep carrying them skidded off the road and fell into a deep khud near Dwara Haat in Almora district Tuesday night.

The accident occurred when the jeep driver lost control while negotiating a sharp turn, police said. The injured were taken to hospital where three are reported to be in serious condition.

In Chamoli district, two persons lost their lives when the truck in which they were travelling hurtled into a deep gorge on the Rishikesh-Badrinath national highway near Joshimuth.

The cement laden truck was on its way to the Vishnuprayag electricity project site, police said.
