Heavy rains disrupt life in Bombay

Sustained heavy rains over the weekend have thrown life in Bombay out of gear.

A tree uprooted by the heavy rains and strong winds at Malad in Bombay Trains on both the Western and Central Railway lines were running at least an hour late, while the Harbour line was shut down by flooding of tracks.

Outstation trains are also delayed.

Traffic on the roads was also affected, with waterlogging reported from many low-lying areas. The police said traffic was being diverted in many areas. Some of the areas where flooding was reported were Parel, Matunga, Suman Nagar, Andheri and Santa Cruz.

People went about their business with rain gearHeavy flooding was reported from King's Circle, Sheetal cinema in Kurla, Khodadad Circle in Dadar, Chunnabhatti, Karani Road in Malad, Milan Subway, Kalachowkie, Thakurdwar, Kasturba Hospital, Shastri Nagar and Sion and 32 trees were reported to have fallen.

At Parel, the roof of Sonawala building hung precariously because of heavy rains and there was danger of it collapsing.

This is the second time this monsoon that rains had thrown life in the metropolis out of gear.

Rains are expected to continue for the next 24 hours and fishermen have been warned not to venture out to sea.

"The coastal Konkan belt and other parts of Maharashtra are likely to face more heavy rains," an official of the weather bureau said.
