Hizb, Lashkar reject ceasefire extension

Two frontline Pakistan-based militant organisations -- Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Tayiba -- Tuesday scoffed at the Union government's one-month extension to the ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir even as Islamabad hoped the step would lead to commencement of talks.

"The ceasefire would be meaningful if it signals the commencement of a purposeful dialogue for a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute," a foreign office statement said in Islamabad.

"The decision (to extend the ceasefire), it must be hoped, will be implemented on ground," the statement said accusing India of violating the ceasefire in the past two months.

Hizbul spokesman Salim Hashmi told journalists that the two-month-long ceasefire had "not brought out any change in the ground situation."

"The extension of the ceasefire would be meaningless unless the Indian government is prepared to hold tripartite talks to resolve the Kashmir dispute," he said.

Lashkar spokesman Yayha Mujahideen said from Lahore that his organisation rejected the ceasefire even when it was announced two months ago. "The latest announcement has not made any difference to us. We will continue with our operations," he said.
