Militants blow up bus in J&K, seven dead

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Seven persons -- four civilians and three soldiers -- were killed and 35 others wounded when militants blew up a state transport bus at village Chattul near Kreeri in northern Barramullah district Sunday morning.

Among the injured are ten soldiers of the 29 Rashtriya Rifles. Six of them are stated to be critical.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Barramullah) Dilbagh Singh said the bus hit an improvised explosive device on the Pattan Kreeri road.

Local police and the army have rushed reinforcements to the spot. Injured civilians have been taken to Srinagar.

Troops have cordoned off the area and mounted searches. No militant group has yet taken responsibility for the explosion.

I another incident, militants Sunday made an unsuccessful bid to destroy the ruling National Conference headquarters in the state by detonating a powerful bomb near its gate.

The bomb, planted inside a dustbin near the gate of Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan, went off around 7.30 am without injuring anyone, the police said.

Window panes of the building and some adjoining complexes were shattered and some vehicles damaged by the blast, they added.
