Stubborn govt will extinguish the ray of hope: Hurriyat

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference Saturday said a stubborn Union Government may "extinguish the last ray of hope" in Jammu and Kashmir.

The APHC executive met in Srinagar to discuss its course of action in the wake of Delhi's refusal to issue travel documents to all five members of its team, selected to travel to Pakistan, for talks with militant organisations.

After the six-hour meeting, the APHC called for a one-day strike in Kashmir in protest against "a spate of custody deaths in Kashmir".

After the executive meeting, APHC chairman Prof Abdul Gani Butt told rediff.com: "The hawks are out to derail the peace process... they don't understand the rationale behind the APHC members' plan to travel to Pakistan. We want to resolve the problems peacefully and that is why we want to go to Islamabad."

He also said the Hurriyat will no longer plead with the government for passports. "It is for the government now to decide."

Butt said: "We have done everything in our control to support the peace process and our stand has been appreciated by the international community. If the peace process derails, the blame would lie with the Government of India."
