Villagers lay siege to police station in TN

Villagers of Kumaralingam, near Udumalpet in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, laid siege to a police station, demanding action against a head constable, who allegedly beat up an old man for blowing a conch.

Police sources said on Wednesday that 58-year-old Venkitachalam blew the conch every day in the early hours during the auspicious Tamil month of Markashi, waking up villagers for prayer and worship.

On Wednesday, however, the head constable on patrol allegedly beat him after a heated argument, for ''creating a nuisance''.

When news of the incident spread, many people assembled near the police station and laid siege to it, demanding immediate action against the head constable.

The villagers also resorted to a road blockade for more than three hours on the Udumalpet-Palani road.

Top police officials have gone to the spot.
