Qureshi case adjourned till Thursday

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate V K Maheshwari Wednesday adjourned the hearing in the Hashim Qureshi case till Thursday when the matter regarding his transit remand would be taken up by the court.

The Jammu and Kashmir government Wednesday moved an application before the ACMM seeking two days' remand to take Qureshi to Srinagar.

Qureshi, a prime accused in the 1971 hijacking of an Indian Airlines plane, was arrested by the Delhi police on December 29 last year soon after his arrival at the Indira Gandhi International Airport from Holland.

Qureshi and his brother had taken the hijacked IA plane to Lahore where they blew it up after letting all the passengers out.

Moving the application for the state of Jammu and Kashmir, Advocate Ashok Mathur said since there was a case pending in Srinagar against Qureshi he should be handed over to the J&K police.

Vikas Pahwa, counsel for Qureshi, however opposed this saying that since his client was not present in the court, the remand should not be granted in absentia.

Accepting Pahwa's plea, the ACMM adjourned the matter till Thursday.
