2 soldiers among 8 killed in J&K

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Eight persons, including two soldiers, were killed and a major and two soldiers wounded as violence continued unabated in the troubled state of Jammu & Kashmir on Monday.

Militants shot at and killed a prominent member of the ruling National Conference, Mohammad Akbar Wani.

Wani headed a sub-auqaf committee managing a shrine at Jenab Sahib Soura in Srinagar. His body was sent to the police hospital for postmortem. It was later taken to his home by the police.

Police said militants ambushed an army patrol at Village Dardpora Bandipore in north Kashmir late on Sunday.

The militants hurled grenades and fired with automatic weapons on the troops, killing two soldiers on the spot. A major and a civilian who received serious injuries were shifted to hospital.

Reinforcements were rushed to the spot immediately and the area sealed. But by Monday evening police admitted that the militants had probably escaped and called off the search.

Meanwhile, the army has been conducting a search in the Rajpore-Sultanpore forests of Kupwara district after a fierce gun battle with militants.

Sources said two soldiers were seriously injured in the fighting which was continuing when reports last came in.

Two foreign militants were killed in two separate encounters at Madar Post in Rajouri district and at Kokernag in Anantnag district.

Police also recovered the body of Khazir Mohammad Ganai, who was abducted by militants from Keller Daji area in Baramulla district.
