Girl killed in militant grenade attack

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

A girl was killed and 30 persons, including four soldiers, were wounded in two powerful explosions at Beerwa in Budgam district of central Kashmir and Sopore in north Kashmir on Sunday.

Police said the soldiers of the 34 Rashtriya Rifles were critically injured when their vehicle ran over an improvised explosive device at Village Suras Khag near Beerwa on Sunday morning. They were admitted to the base hospital.

Militants lobbed a powerful hand-grenade in Iqbal Market in Sopore town in Baramulla district, injuring 26 bystanders. They were moved to various hospitals in Srinagar, but one girl died in the Soura Medical Institute. The condition of four others is said to be critical.

Militants also shot at and killed Fayaz Ahmed Ganaei, a suspected police informer, at Khan Sahib in Budgam district.

At Charar-e-Sharief in the same district, a man identified as Mohammad Akbar was gunned down on Sunday afternoon.

A surrendered militant identified as Mohammad Ashraf was shot at and critically wounded in Village Rakhe Ashm. Ashraf later died.
