111 women among 7,356 nominees for J&K poll

Of the total 7,356 nominations filed for local body elections in Jammu & Kashmir, 111 are women candidates who have filed their nominations in Poonch, Rajouri and Kupwara districts.

The elections are to be held for 302 panchayats and sarpanch constituencies in Poonch, Rajouri and Kupwara districts.

Of the 111 women candidates, 14 have filed nominations for sarpanch (village chief) constituencies and 97 for panch (village council member) constituencies.

According to the state election authority, 353 candidates -- 163 in Mendhar and Balakote blocks and 182 in Sunderbani, Kalakote and Nowshera blocks -- were declared elected unopposed after the last date for withdrawal of nominations. The remaining eight candidates were declared elected unopposed in Poonch district.
