Tremors felt in J&K, north India

Tremors from an earthquake, measuring 6.7 on the Richter Scale, were felt in the Kashmir Valley, Jammu and other parts of north India on Sunday morning.

The epicentre of the quake was on Afghanistan's border with Tajikistan, an official at the Indian Meteorological Department in Delhi told rediff.com The quake had its latitude at 36.5 degree north and 70.6 degree east.

Jammu and Kashmir felt the tremors most, he said.

There were no reports of casualties or damage to buildings.

"Everything was shaking. It reminded us of the Gujarat earthquake," a rediff.com correspondent in Srinagar said. He was among the many residents of the city who rushed out of their homes when they felt the tremors at around 0752 hours.

Tremors were felt in all districts of Kashmir and Jammu, J&K police sources told rediff.com The Valley, which is in the Hind Kush region, is classified seismic Zone 5. Tremors have been felt on and off in the Valley in recent years, one resident said, adding that the distress visible on Sunday morning was perhaps a consequence of last month's quake in Gujarat.

In Delhi too, resident of apartment blocks ran out of their buildings after the tremors began. Tremors were also felt in parts of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan as well as in Pakistan.
