21 peacocks found dead in Sikar

At least 21 peacocks were found dead in Sikar district, about 150 kilometers from Jaipur, during the last 24 hours according to reports reaching the state capital.

While the deaths of 11 peacocks have been reported from Khirod village, about 18 kilometers from Nawalgarh town, 10 other peacocks were reportedly found dead near village Kudan in Sikar district.

Two peacocks were found dead last week near Chachiwada Bara village.

Forest officials, however, rules out hands of poachers. A preliminary investigation revealed the birds died of a bacterial infection.

The post-mortem of the two peacocks, found dead last week, revealed that the birds were suffering from pneumonitis and gastroenteritis. The post-mortem was conducted by a team of veterinary doctors, headed by Dr P K Mehrotra of the Rajasthan Agricultural University, Bikaner.

Mehrotra said a bacterial infection was found in the lungs of the dead birds whose livers and small intestines were swollen and filled with blood.

Villagers reported that the peacocks were showing signs of illness. They suffered from paralytic attacks and bleeding from beaks just before they died.

The forest officials are now trying to give antibiotics to the peacocks as suggested by veterinarian doctors. Drinking water mixed with the drugs is being kept in the areas were the peacocks come to drink.
