Eight foreign militants, army jawan killed in Poonch

Eight suspected foreign mercenaries and an army jawan were killed and a junior commissioned officer injured in an encounter in Dhoom-Soom forests in Poonch district Tuesday, a defence spokesman said in Jammu Wednesday.

The army launched a search operation after a patrol party sighted a group of eight ultras moving in the forests.

In the encounter, which lasted nearly five hours, the eight ultras and a havaldar, Jora Singh, were killed, he said. Subedar Harshad Khan was injured, the spokesman added.

Recoveries from the militants included one gun with 115 rounds, five AK rifles with 18 magazines and 297 rounds, hand grenades and Rs 88,000 in cash.

In another incident, militants burnt three forest huts in Bukar-Inshan and Wadwan area of Doda district on Monday night, police said.

The militants hurled a grenade and fired at a CRPF party which was on panchayat elections duty at Janthali village of Doda district on Monday.

CRPF troops retaliated but the militants escaped, police added.
