5 cops killed, 10 injured in J&K attacks

Mukhtar Ahmed in Srinagar

In separate incidents, militants on Monday attacked police and paramilitary forces with grenades and assault rifles killing five and injuring 10 others, including five members of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.

Late on Monday afternoon, a jeep of the Jammu & Kashmir Armed Police carrying a detainee to Srinagar was attacked by militants with assault rifles near Amargarh in Sopore on the Srinagar-Kupwara highway. Head Constable Ghulam Rasool was killed on the spot. Three other JKAP personnel and the detainee, Mohammed Ramzan, received serious and were rushed to hospital. Two policemen, Mohammed Asif and Manzoor Ahmed, died in hospital.

In another incident, militants attacked the ITBP battalion headquarters at Bemina in Srinagar with rifle grenades, killing a trooper on the spot and injuring five others grievously. Senior police and ITBP officers rushed to the spot. The ITBP, besides conducting counter-insurgency operations, guards the Pattan-Srinagar highway.

Militants also attacked a Border Security Force post with a grenade in downtown Srinagar, resulting in injuries to four personnel of the paramilitary force.

A report from Palhallan near Pattan said militants late on Sunday gunned down Police Constable Nazir Ahmad, who was posted in the counter-intelligence department of the state police.

Meanwhile, life in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir, remained disrupted for the fourth day in a row, prompting police to enforce an undeclared curfew in uptown localities on Monday.

For the first time in four days, traffic began plying on the roads and shops in some localities reopened. But youths shouting pro-freedom slogans came out on the streets and began pelting stones at passing vehicles. Within minutes the streets were deserted again and shopkeepers downed their shutters.

Police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel had a tough time dispersing the youths. Despite the undeclared curfew, youths in Batmaloo, Rambagh, Maisuma, Dal Gate, Nowpora, Abiguzar Nowhatta, Sakidaffer, Nowsehra Rainawari and Khanyar localities continued to throw stones and burn tyres on the streets. At Saida Kadal police fired warning shots while in some other localities they resorted to a baton charge to restore order.

Nearly 4,000 persons joined the fourth day ceremony of Javed Ahmad Nath who died in firing by an army soldier at Maisuma in the city on Friday. Crowds, after offering fateha (prayers) at the Dal Gate graveyard, turned violent and staged a demonstration in uptown Srinagar. They were chased away by the police.
