Haigam death toll rises to six

With two more people succumbing to their injuries, the death toll in Thursday's firing incident at Haigam-Sopore in north Kashmir has gone up to six, official sources said on Friday.

Nayeema Kabir, sister of Jaleel Ahmad Shah, a medical shop owner and district secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front whose alleged custodial death sparked protests and demonstrations, and Mohammad Sultan succumbed to injuries late on Thursday night, the sources said.

The said the condition of five others was still serious.

Four people were killed and 26 wounded when security forces opened fire on demonstrators who had blocked Srinagar-Baramulla National Highway at Haigam village on Thursday.

People started assembling at Haigam since early in the morning and the situation in the village, 60 kms from Srinagar, was 'tense', the sources said adding the situation is being monitored closely by the police.
