Bhakti Barve killed in road accident: PTI

She was returning to Bombay from Wai in Satara district after performing at a stage show, when the mishap occurred at 0600 hours IST on the new Bombay-Pune expressway, police said.

The driver of the car also died on the spot, police added.

Another occupant of the car, Dayanand Manjrekar, who was injured, was admitted to a private hospital at Panvel.

Bhakti started her career as a news reader on television and shot into fame after her memorable performance in the Marathi drama Ti Phul Rani, written by P L Deshpande.

She acted in many TV serials and dramas besides the Hindi film Jaane Bhi Do Yaroon and was the wife of character actor, the late Shafi Inamdar.

Her sterling performance opposite the late Satish Dubhashi in Ti Phulrani, of a village flower-seller being groomed into a high society girl, had won accolades from critics as well as the audience. She was also known for her contribution to Gujarati theatre.

Bhakti received several awards, including the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar, Sangeet Natak Akademi award and Abhinay Puraskar.

Born on September 10, 1948 at Sangli, Bhakti began her career by acting for Sudha Karmarkar's Little Theatre. She also had a short stint as announcer on All India Radio and later as a news reader on Doordarshan.
