Three-member central team visits J&K

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

A three-member team comprising Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Chamanlal Gupta and Sardar Tarlochan Singh, vice-chairman of the National Commission for Minorities, visited Jammu and Kashmir on Monday on Prime Minister A B Vajpayee's directive to take stock of the situation following the killing of six Sikhs by terrorists in Srinagar on Saturday.

While Dhindsa and Singh returned to New Delhi on Monday evening, Gupta stayed back in Jammu to pacify the agitated Sikhs. One Sikh was killed in police firing in Jammu division on Monday.

The delegation will meet Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Tuesday after Gupta returns and give him its assessment of the situation.

Dhindsa refused to speak to rediff.com, saying he would only give his views to the prime minister. But sources close to him said the delegation was upset at the developments in the last two days in Srinagar.

The Sikh community took to the streets in Udhampur, Jammu, Srinagar and Baramulla on Monday to protest against the lack of security. Last year, 36 Sikhs were killed in Chattisinghpura during US President Bill Clinton's visit to India. Later, the Lashkar-e-Tayiba claimed responsibility for the killings.
