Militant groups condemn Musharraf govt; to protest on Friday

A conglomerate of Pakistan's hardline religious parties has condemned the Musharraf government for taking action against the activities of fundamentalist groups and announced plans to hold protest demonstrations on Friday.

Leaders of the Afghanistan and Pakistan defence council, which previously organised the anti-US and pro-Taliban agitations in the country, criticised the government for taking Pakistan towards 'secularism'.

They said claims by India and America that Lashkar-e-Tayiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad were terrorist organisations were false.

"The government has no reasonable justification for the arrest of Qazi Hussain Ahmad, Maulana Fuzlur-Rehman, Azam Tariq and Shah Ahmad Noorani and some other important Islamic leaders," the leaders added.

"Regrettably, General Musharraf has carried out a campaign against the Islamic parties, which have rendered sacrifices for the defence of Islam and the country in every crisis."

The leaders said they would hold a peaceful protest demonstration against the government policies on Friday.

They demanded that the government release all the Islamic leaders to bring out the country from the current crisis.

"The US military must be pulled out from the country as soon as possible because after the fall of Taliban regime they have no justification for their stay in Pakistan," they said.
