Hizb suffers major setback in north Kashmir

Close on the heels of the gunning down of its divisional commander Nazir Ahmad Itoo alias Shakir Gaznavi, the Hizbul Mujahideen suffered yet another major set back in north Kashmir on Friday when search parties recovered the bodies of two top operatives and unearthed a huge cache of arms from the scene of the encounter at Pattan on Thursday.

The army and Special Operations Group at Goshbug village in Baramulla district jointly launched the operation on Thursday.

The bodies of the two militants were identified as Sajad Ahmad Bhat and Nazir Ahmad Malik.

An official spokesman termed the killing of Shakir and two of his close associates on Thursday night as a 'major blow' to the Hizbul Mujahideen.

He added that Shakir was the kingpin and chief coordinator of all militant activities in Baramulla and adjoining areas.

"His elimination has shaken the very foundation of Hizbul Mujahideen in north Kashmir district as he was the man behind raising finances for militant activities and planning all major attacks," the spokesman said.
