Two armymen gunned down by militants in J&K

Mukhtar Ahmed in Srinagar

Militants on Friday afternoon gunned down two army intelligence personnel at village Wanigam Payeen near Pattan in the north Kashmir district of Baramulla.

Police sources said militants opened fire from a close range on the two armymen identified by police as Lance Naik Jai Singh and rifleman Javed Ahmed.

Both Singh and Ahmed died on the spot. Sources said militants also took away the service revolvers of the two intelligence personnel.

Army and police rushed to the spot immediately.

Security forces mounted search operations in the area. No one has yet admitted responsibility for the killings.

Meanwhile, life in the entire Kashmir valley was crippled in view of the general strike called by the Jaish-e-Mohammed against the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance.

All shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed in the valley.

Security in the city was tight with paramilitary forces and police patrolling the streets.
