Three militants of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayiba outfit were killed as army foiled their attempt to storm the headquarters of 21-Rashtriya Rifles in Kupwara district in north Kashmir on Tuesday afternoon, a defence spokesman said.
Two army personnel were also killed in the gunfight, which lasted for a brief period at the main gate of the camp at Bagatpora in Zachaldara area, the spokesman said.
The militants travelling in a private car forced their way into the headquarters around 11.30 am, but their vehicle got struck near the main gate due to a hurdle set up by the security forces, the spokesman said.
Soon the militants started firing on the nearby picket targeting troops, causing serious injuries to two jawans, who later succumbed to their injuries, he added.
Troops eliminated the trio in the retaliatory action, the spokesman said adding that two have been identified as Abu Bakar and Abu Fittar of Pakistan-based LeT.
A large quantity of arms and ammunition were recovered from the killed militants.
