Path clear for Jaya to take over as CM: Panneerselvam

"The path is clear for Jayalalithaa to take over as chief minister," was how Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam reacted to the Madras High Court's judgment acquitting the AIADMK supremo of wrongdoing in the TANSI and Pleasant Stay hotel cases.

Panneerselvam, who was handpicked by Jayalalithaa to succeed her on September 21 after the Supreme Court set aside her appointment as chief minister, arrived at Jayalalithaa's Poes garden residence soon after the judgment and immediately met top AIADMK leaders.

Jubilant partymen distributed sweets to passers-by outside Jayalalithaa's residence.

DMK chief M Karunanidhi, whose government had initiated the cases against Jayalalithaa, said "I respect the judgment."

Asked whether the DMK would file an appeal in the Supreme Court, challenging the acquittals, he said it was for legal experts to go into the question.
