Suspect behind TN hooch tragedy commits suicide

One of the suspects behind the hooch tragedy at Natham village in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore district, which claimed over 50 lives, has allegedly committed suicide at Ulundurpet in Villupuram district, police said on Monday.

The body of Mattakalai alias Govindan had been recovered and sent for post-mortem, they said.

Doctors at the government hospital in Cuddalore said they had shifted 10 of those who had consumed the poisonous brew to the intensive care unit and their condition was critical.

Meanwhile, five more policemen attached to the Pudupet police station had been suspended taking the total number of police personnel suspended to 13.

An all-party meeting convened on Sunday night demanded filing criminal cases against the erring police personnel and a judicial probe into the tragedy.
