An army major and seven militants were among 10 people killed since Saturday night in Jammu and Kashmir where militants triggered a landmine blast targeting a vehicle carrying security personnel, who escaped unhurt, official sources said.

Major U N Jalota and two Harkat-e-Islami militants were killed in an encounter that broke out during search operations in Keri area in Poonch district on Saturday evening, they said. Four jawans were injured in the gunfight.

The slain militants had been identified as Shahid Hussain and Mohammad Anwar of Kotli in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, the sources said.

In another operation, troops gunned down two militants, responsible for the killing of senior Congress leader Daya Ram, in Bani forest area in Kathua district early on Sunday, they said. Efforts to track down two other militants were on.

Security forces shot dead two militants in Paddar area of Doda district early on Sunday, they said.

Another terrorist was killed in an encounter with the Border Security Force at Wahibug in Pulwama district.
