TN hooch tragedy toll rises to 53

The toll in the hooch tragedy at Panruti near Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu has risen to 53, with 17 more people succumbing to the killer brew since Friday night.

The deceased included three women, one of whom sold the brew, allegedly mixed with methanol.

Police said nearly 200 people were battling for life in the district headquarters hospital in Cuddalore.

Resident Medical Officer Dr R Narayanasamy said there was a possibility of the number of deaths going up as the condition of most of those admitted was serious.

So far, 30 people have lost their vision, he said.

An expert team of doctors from Madras, headed by Dr Raji, is coordinating the treatment.
