J&K police releases 7 girls held for questioning

Mukhtar Ahmad In Srinagar

Seven girls who were arrested by the security forces from Bandipore area in northern Kashmir district of Baramulla were released late on Friday, according to a senior police officer.

However, two girls who were arrested from Khapora and Khayar in Bandipore were still in custody. The officer said the two girls, Tahira and Rifat, had been handed over to the police.

The officer said that a wireless set and documents were recovered from the houses of the two girls. "They have been handed over to the local police".

"The other seven girls were handed over to their relatives," he added.

The army and the special operations group had arrested nine girls for questioning from various places in Bandipore during the wee hours of Friday.

The residents alleged that the girls were subjected to "severe torture". They also denied that those arrested were involved in any militant activity.

However, a spokesman of the Rashtriya Rifles told local newspapers that the girls were arrested on "specific charges of being in league with the militants".

Bandipore was rocked by massive protests on Friday following the arrest of the girls. Mobs shouting anti-government slogans marched in the main town.

The protestors attacked the office of the ruling National Conference and torched furniture and records.

They also pelted stones on the police station.
