Moopanar's son to be elected party president

K Govindavasan, son of Tamil Maanila Congress founder G K Moopanar, who died on Thursday, will succeed him as party president at a meeting of the TMC's legislature party and frontline leaders in a couple of days, top TMC sources said in Madras on Thursday.

Senior party leaders had taken the decision at an informal meeting in the second week of August and it was duly communicated to Moopanar, who had been admitted to the Sri Ramachandra Medical College hospital, the sources said.

The decision was meant to ease the burden on Moopanar in view of his failing health, they said.

The TMC's general council would soon be convened to ratify the decision, the sources added.

Moopanar, who had sacked all the party office bearers in June last, had not made any new appointments since then, they said.
