N Sathiya Moorthy in Madras
Govindaswami Karuppiah Moopanar, the founder-president of Tamil Maanila Congress, passed away in a Madras hospital after a prolonged illness.
Moopanar, 71, is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
He had been admitted to the Sri Ramachandra Medical College Hospital on July 31 for a surgery to set right a hip-fracture.
While the surgery itself was said to be successful, Moopanar suffered from breathlessness a few days later. His condition, which had stabilised after he was put on a ventilator, took a turn for the worse on Monday.
After a bout of pneumonia, Moopanar suffered 'pulmonary oedema', which doctors said proved to be fatal.
The funeral will take place on Friday evening, TMC treasurer D Sudarsanam said.
Moopanar's body would be first taken to his house at Mylapore and then to the Kamaraj Arangam at Anna Salai to enable the people to pay homage to the departed leader, he said.
