Women's separatist group backs Islamic dress code campaign

Jammu and Kashmir's leading women's separatist group on Tuesday backed the shadowy militant outfit Lashkar-e-Jabbar, which is responsible for the acid attack on women to enforce wearing of burqa (veil), and called for a social boycott of those who do not adhere to the Islamic dress code.

The chief of Dukhteran-e-Milat (DeM) Asiya Indrabi said, "We are indebted to those courageous men who have started a campaign for the veil in Kashmir and made us realise that we are Muslims."

"Let us take a pledge that as long as souls are in our bodies, we will strictly adhere to Islamic dress code," she said in a statement released to the vernacular press in Srinagar.

She urged the Muslims in the state to socially boycott those who do not adopt the dress code.

DeM is the first outfit to support the violent campaign, which has been opposed by all major militant groups and condemned by the Hurriyat Conference, the biggest amalgam of separatist groups.

Indrabi said, "It was a matter of satisfaction that 80 per cent of women have adopted the Islamic dress code."
