The West Bengal government on Monday said it would take steps to erect a statue and name a road in Calcutta after Mother Teresa, whose 91st birthday was celebrated with an all-faith prayer meeting for communal harmony and world peace.
State Minister for Cooperative Development and Consumer Affairs Naren De said: "We will make arrangements so that Mother Teresa's next birthday is celebrated in front of her statue."
"We feel bad that there is no statue of her in Calcutta, the city that she chose as the centre of her missionary activities," De said while speaking at a function organised by the Mother Teresa Birthday Celebration and Millennium Award Ceremony Committee.
Earlier, participating in the prayer meeting organised by All India Peace Council, Calcutta Municipal Corporation Mayor Subrata Mukherjee said he supported the naming of a road after Mother Teresa.
