Two militants involved in an attack on Poonch police station on Thursday night were killed on Saturday in the hills surrounding the border town, official sources said.
The sources attributed this to the 'rapid action' of the security forces.
Seven policemen were killed in the attack by the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayiba group in what is being viewed as a bizarre display by the militants of their firepower and strike capability.
Poonch is one of the best-guarded towns in Jammu and Kashmir and lies just six km from the Line of Control that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan.
Inspector General of Police Radha Vinod Raju said that a police party that had chased the fleeing militants gunned down two of them and also recovered a self loading rifle that the militants had managed to take away after the attack.
"This is enough proof that these were the two militants involved in the attack on the policemen," Raju said.
He said the militants, who had been identified as Abu Shahid and Mohammad Bilal, had been sighted and killed at Bains, on the outskirts of Poonch town.
The Lashkar-e-Tayiba has threatened to launch more attacks on police stations in the state.
