Centre may extend amnesty to security personnel

The Centre is considering extending general amnesty to security personnel against whom cases of human rights violation had been registered during their fight against militancy in several parts of the country.

"The Centre is thinking of extending relief to security personnel within the ambit of the Constitution for their fight against terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast," Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani said on Saturday.

"The Union home ministry will soon hold confabulations with the law ministry in order to work out the modalities," he said.

The home minister ruled out general amnesty for terrorists who want to return to mainstream.

The announcement by Advani assumes significance in view of the cases of human rights violations against 600 Punjab police personnel during the turbulent period in the state.

Lauding their role in bringing peace in Punjab and other parts of the country, Advani said the security forces must be given special rights and protection to fight terrorism.
