CPI-M wants maximum autonomy for Kashmir

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The central committee of the Communist Party of India - Marxist, which met in New Delhi on August 11 and August 12, has asked the Union government to give maximum autonomy to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, but within the ambit of article 370.

Talking to newsmen, the party general secretary Harkishen Singh Surjeet said the party strongly condemns the terrorist attacks, which had led to the heinous massacres of innocent people in Doda and Kishtwar region and attack at the Jammu railway station.

He accused the central government in failing in its duty to protect the lives of citizens in this region.

"While demanding the government to take adequate measures, the central committee wishes to emphasise that the BJP-led government has a wrong and harmful approach to the problem of Jammu and Kashmir," he said.

The central committee strongly criticised the government's refusal to consider provision of maximum autonomy to the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani categorically rejected the demand for autonomy in the Parliament recently.

"The government believes that by security operations, the problem of Jammu and Kashmir could be solved," Surjeet said.

"The government is following the dictates of the American imperialists and ignoring the national interests. By lowering the import rates the government has harmed the interests of the farmers and the prices of the agricultural produce has fallen substantially," he said.

He accused the government for mishandling of economic situation in the country and rapped the central government for betraying the small investors in the US-64 scam.

"The central committee asserted that the Finance Minister, Yashwant Sinha, cannot be allowed to continue in his post after the series of scandals affecting the financial sector. He should resign forthwith," he said.

The committee also criticised the Vajpayee government for welcoming the Bush administration's aggressive National Missile Defence plan.

"It succumbs to the US on all issues connected with India's economic sovereignty, trade and other basic rights," he said.

To register its protest the central committee has decided to organise 2000 rallies all over the country for two weeks beginning from September 7 to 21.

It would also stage a three-day dharna in Delhi from September 25-27 during which more then one million people and party workers would court arrest.
