Militants in Kashmir impose dress code for women

Mukhtar Ahmad In Srinagar

Tailors in the south Kashmir districts of Anantnag and Pulwama are busy. Reason? They have been flooded with orders for pherans (loose robes) and burkhas.

In the two districts, a large number of women have been going out wearing either the pheran or the burkha. This follows a campaign by various outfits asking them to go out in "proper dress" and avoid using "indecent clothes".

The campaign is being spearheaded by the Lashkar-e-Jabbar, a lesser-known militant outfit.

However, frontline terrorist groups, including the Lashkar-e-Tayiba, clarified that "we don't believe in enforcing social changes".

"Yes, many women in Pulwama are now going out in veil, while others are using the pheran," said a police official.

The recent incidents of acid throwing in Srinagar and Pulwama have added to the tension.

On Tuesday, unidentified persons threw acid on two teachers, minutes after they came out of a bus.

A senior police officer said, "We are watching the situation and security has been mounted."
