J&K police gun down LeT area commander

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Jammu and Kashmir police achieved a major breakthrough when they gunned down a Lashkar-e-tayiba area commander Abu Ghulam in the early hours of Tuesday in an encounter near the Himachal border.

J&K Director General of Police A K Suri told rediff.com, "The encounter took place at around 0400 hours (IST) when Ghulam tried to escape the dragnet spread by the police to nab him. We have found documents from his possession, which showed his involvement in the killing of 15 persons near Kishtwar on Saturday morning."

Suri also said that another militant was killed in a separate encounter though details are yet to come in.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Home I D Swami, who had gone to Jammu to study the situation in the region, returned to Delhi.

He is expected to submit his report to Union Home Minister L K Advani some time in the afternoon after which the latter is expected to make a statement in Parliament.
