'Order immediate closure of all asylums
around Erwadi'

An emergency meeting, convened by the Ramanathapuram district administration in the wake of the death of 26 mentally challenged persons in a fire, has recommended that the Tamil Nadu government order the immediate closure of all mental asylums in and around Erwadi dargah.

The dargah committee, which also participated in the meeting on Monday night, agreed to the recommendations.

State Labour Minister and Ramanathapuram MLA Anwar Raja, who presided over, later told reporters that the meeting had recommended that action be taken against those who admitted mentally ill persons to these institutions.

Relatives of these persons should refrain from sending them to the asylums in Erwadi, he said.

The administration also requested the government to immediately arrange for the posting of a psychiatrist at the Ramanathapuram hospital and open a burns ward for treating the fire victims.

The meeting was attended by District Collector S Vijaykumar, Inspector General Balachandran, Deputy IG Sanjeev Kumar and other top police officials.
