Swami in Jammu to study situation

Binoo Joshi in Jammu

A two-member government team led by Minister of State for Home ID Swami arrived on Monday in Jammu to review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of Saturday's massacre of 15 Hindus in Doda district.

Ashok Bhandari, special secretary, home (Jammu and Kashmir affairs), is accompanying Swami during his daylong visit. They will submit a report to Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani.

Swami had also visited Kishtwar last week following the July 22 massacre of 12 Hindus in a village nearby.

The minister's report on the ground situation including security in Doda district will form the basis of a meeting Advani has convened for Wednesday to devise a 'proper response' to the recent spate of civilian killings in the state.

The central team will interact with leaders and prominent citizens in Doda, Kishtwar and Atholi districts as well as hold meetings with top security officials including officers of the Indian army in Jammu.

Official sources said the minister will be briefed about the need to augment security.
