Police admits to wrongly detaining Jamaat chief's son

An embarrassed Delhi police admitted on Saturday to wrongly detaining three Kashmiri youths, including the son of the Jamaat-e-Islami chief, for over five hours.

The police said they had detained the three for over five hours on Friday morning on suspicion that they were buying arms. They were released in the evening after verification.

Police sources said Shabir Bhat, son of Jamaat-e-Islami chief G M Bhat, along with his friend Mohammed Sayeed and servant Mohammed Ibrahim, were detained at the Turkman Gate police station.

On July 30, the Delhi police had detained for over five hours the Superintendent of Police of Baramulla, Seikh Abdul Rashid.

Rashid was mistaken for a Kashmiri terrorist. The police later apologised to him.
