Law catches up with top Punjab lawman

Our Correspondent in Chandigarh

In a landmark judgment, the Patiala district and sessions court has sentenced Additional Director General D S Bhullar of the Punjab police to rigorous life imprisonment along with three others for the murder of non-resident Indian P S Sahota and two of his associates, Satnam Singh and Vikram Singh.

This is probably the first time such a senior police officer has been convicted of such a grave crime. In fact, the prosecution strenuously sought the death sentence for Bhullar. But the judge settled for rigorous life imprisonment.

Sahota was a business partner of Bhullar, but they had developed some differences following which Bhullar got Sahota and his associates killed in 1996.

The charred bodies of the three men were found in a car near Khanna, about 60km from the state capital, Chandigarh.

Bhullar's associates in the crime were Assistant Sub-Inspector Krishna Kumar and two others, A S Bath and Ladvinder Singh.

The Central Bureau of Investigation had taken over the case in September 1996.

Following the sentence, Bhullar was arrested, but was later admitted to hospital on complaining of chest pain.
