Security forces, on specific information that a group of four heavily armed militants were planning to attack pilgrims on a 25-km stretch between Poonch town and Mandi, launched an operation on Thursday night, the spokesman said.
Around 0230 hours (IST) on Friday, security personnel came across a group of four persons approaching the road, he said. When challenged by security forces, they fired from their automatic weapons.
The security forces retaliated and in the exchange of fire, two ultras were killed on the spot while two of their associates managed to escape.
During search operation early on Friday morning, security forces recovered one AK-47 rifle with three magazines, one Chinese pistol with one magazine, one revolver, 11 RPG rockets, 20 UGBL grenades, 12 hand grenades and three metallic cylindrical IED containers.
