Two killed as army opens fire
on procession in Kashmir

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Aramed escorts of a passing army convoy opened fire on a procession at Magam in central Budgam district on Friday killing two people, including a 12-year-old boy, and wounding nine others.

The injured have been admitted to the SMHS hospital in Srinagar. The condition of two of the injured is stated to be critical.

Hundreds of people had joined the fateha (prayers after death) of the slain Hizbul Mujaheedin batallion commander Mustaffa, who was killed in Goigam in Budgam district on July 30 in a skirmish with the security forces.

After the prayer, over 25,000 people shouting pro-freedom slogans were marching towards Magam, a nearby town, when some of the protestors hurled stones at an army convoy passing by.

Armed escorts of the convoy retaliated by opening fire at the mob killing two people and injuring nine others.

The injured were rushed to a hospital in Srinagar.

Additional forces have been rushed to Magam.
