Hurriyat adopts a new strategy

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Dejected by the failure of the Agra summit, the leaders of the Hurriyat Conference have decided to adopt a new strategy to spread their message to every nook and corner of India.

Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, former chairman of the Hurriyat Conference, told rediff.com that the organisation's leaders would visit important cities in the country to express their views.

"We have decided to adopt the new strategy in view of the realisation that our stand has not been properly understood by the people of India," Mirwaiz said.

Asked what kind of response Hurriyat got during its visit to Calcutta, the mirwaiz said: "We received a good response. We had a good meeting with the former chief minister of West Bengal Jyoti Basu."

The Hurriyat leaders would be visiting Madras on Friday. They also plan to visit Hyderabad, Bangalore, Bombay and other major cities in the country.

"I am going to Madras to meet the political leaders of Tamil Nadu. We want to spread our message amongst the Indian masses and seek their support," Mirwaiz said.
