Major terrorist network busted, 23 arrested

In a significant breakthrough, central intelligence agencies and various state police organisations on Tuesday busted a major terrorist network with the arrest of 23 people, including two each from Hizbul Mujahideen and Students Islamic Movement of India.

"The busting of this terrorist network exposes the strategy of Hizbul Mujahideen to fan out in the hinterland and enlist support of fundamentalist cadres like those of the SIMI," Home Secretary Kamal Pande said.

The arrests were made from Delhi, Hyderabad, Jalgaon and Kanpur, he added.

He said most of those arrested had connections with SIMI, which was allegedly, involved in the Kanpur riots earlier this year. The operations were still continuing.

The arrested persons were allegedly involved in 14 cases of terrorist violence

Pande said the terrorists had planned 'to wreak violence in several states' and their 'nefarious plans' were thwarted.
