P C Sharma, special director in the Central Bureau of Investigation, took charge as acting director of the bureau from R K Raghavan on Monday.
Raghavan, while handing over charge to Sharma, said the CBI needed more personnel to handle cases. He also said that today, every Indian Police Service officer in the country aspires to become the CBI director, as it has attained a certain credibility and high profile. He regretted that the CBI's selection process should have run into problems because of certain court cases.
Sharma, who spent 21 years in the CBI in various capacities, was confident that he would be able to discharge his duties as acting director effectively.
He was confident that given his track record, the government would consider his case sympathetically.
Sharma, a post-graduate in English, was allotted the Assam/Meghalaya cadre in the Indian Police Service. He has wide experience of the CBI's working, having served the organisation as SP, DIG, joint director, additional director and special director. He has worked in almost all branches of the CBI, and has been special director from March 1999.
Sharma was decorated with the President's police medal for distinguished service on the eve of Republic Day in 1991 and the police medal for meritorious service on Independence Day in 1984.
Before joining the IPS, he worked as a lecturer in English for one and a half years.
Raghavan retired after 38 years of service.
